In 1964, the United States made the decision to commit major(ip) ground, air and naval forces to Vietnam. Before this time there was a sticky situation in South Vietnam. The government was continuously being challenged and Vietnam itself was being ru conduct by outside entities. This led to the uprise in communism. Due to the uprise and Johnsons experience self image issues the Vietnam War became what it is at present remembered as, a catastrophe and confusion. The South Vietnam situation relates directly to the government. In South Vietnam, approximately the time of the United States decision, Ngo Dinh Diem appeared to be a worthy leader and one that would communicate effectively with the United States. foregoing to this time of course the French and Japanese were largely involved, as well as the Chinese in the start of creating what is now Vietnam. After the creation of the Geneva Accords in 1954 the United States refractory to trust not only Diem unless help in any form that was necessary. At first, politicians believed that Diem could be easily swayed and influenced. However, this guess is one of the things the led to the tragedy. Diem and Lansdale got rid of most of the competition between 1954 and 1960. There were a few exceptions to this of course, the catholicism in the North, Buddhists, and the Communists ability to reorganize. These exceptions caused politicians to see that Diem was not someone who we could easily make into a puppet.
