What is Structuralism?
Structuralism is the name that is addicted to a wide range of discourses that study underlying structures of signification. importee occurs wherever there is a meaningful event or in the practise of some meaningful action. Hence the phrase, signifying practices. A meaningful event might include all of quest: writing or reading a text; acquiring married; having a discussion over a shape of coffee; a battle. Most (if not all) meaningful events take aim either a document or an exchange that give the sack be documented. This would be called a text. Texts might include any of the following: a news broadcast; an advertisement; an interlingual rendition of Shakespeares King Lear; the manual for my new washing railway car; the wedding vows; a feature film. From the point of view of structural anthropology all texts, all meaningful events and all signifying practices can be analysed for their underlying structures. Such an analysis would reveal the patterns that characterise the formation that adjudges such texts and practices possible. We cannot see a structure or a system per se. In fact it would be very inept for us if we were aware at all times of the structures that make our signifying practices possible.
Rather they remain unconscious but necessary aspects of our building block way of being what we are. Structuralism therefore promises to offer insights into what makes us the way we are.
Where does structuralism come from?
Structuralism first comes to intumescency as a specific discourse with the work of a Swiss linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, who developed a branch of linguistics called Structural Linguistics. Saussure died before he was able to publish his poppycock but we have the meticulously recorded notes of several of his students do during the 2nd course of 1908-1909.
