Latinos and Law

The Latino community in the U.S. has consistently used the courts to ensure equal treatment for completely in a number of critical areas in gracious rights and human rights jurisprudence. The modern civil rights era has too wedge upon the actual experience of Latinos and all national minorities in this country. As Congress considers sweeping changes to immigration law, virtually all the debate has centered on the problem of banned immigration. The current system of legal immigration dates to 1965. It marked a radical break with previous policy and has led to profound demographic changes in America. While more Latinos are coming into contact with the criminal-justice system, less believe the system will treat Latinos fairly. Latinos opinions are also closer to Blacks on their concerns about excessive force. Hispanics are overrepresented in the nations criminal justice system, with Hispanic defendants imprisoned three times as often and detained before trial for first-time offenses almost twice as often as whites, despite being the least likely of all ethnic groups to have a criminal history.
